10 — Mashup
Mashup is a free canvas. Where the Timeline sequences tracks one after another, Mashup lets you put any piece of audio anywhere and layer it against anything else.
How it differs from a DJ mix
| DJ mix (Timeline) | Mashup | |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | A playlist of tracks in order | One big canvas |
| Lanes | Two decks + samples + voice | One Master lane + four Sample lanes |
| Tempo | Project tempo | The Master lane sets it |
| Transitions | A window between each pair | None — place things freely |
| Samples | Linked to their track | Independent — nothing moves together |
| Export | Audio, playlist, platforms | Audio only |
| Automix / Harmonize | Yes | No |
A mashup can't be side-loaded into a DJ mix. To use one inside a set, export it as a WAV, add that file to your library, and treat it as a track.
The lanes
Master dictates tempo. Whatever you drop there sets the grid, and the tempo lane follows it. Samples 1 and 2 are open by default; 3 and 4 are folded away — click a lane name to fold or unfold, and the state persists.
Every lane has its own volume, solo, mute and High / Mid / Low / Filter trim knobs. Drag a knob to change it, double-click to reset.
Getting audio in
Drag from your library, or drop a file from Finder. Finder drops work fully — the BPM is detected from the audio itself, so you still get a grid, snapping and tempo-matching without the file being in your library.
The tools
The pointer is the default. What you do depends on where you press:
| Press on | Cursor | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The clip's title bar | hand | Move the clip |
| The clip's waveform | I-beam | Hold and drag to select a region |
| A clip edge | resize | Trim |
| Empty canvas | default | Click to place the playhead, drag to pan |
Release without dragging and you're back to the pointer. Clips snap to the master grid; hold Shift to place freely.
Clip icons
On each clip's title bar: ≣ separates stems and toggles the stem view, ≈ toggles tempo-matching to the master.
Working with a selection
Hold and drag across a waveform to paint a region, then right-click for the selection menu:
| Action | Key |
|---|---|
| Copy · Cut · Paste | ⌘C ⌘X ⌘V |
| Delete the region (leaves a gap) | ⌫ |
| Mute the region in place (clip stays whole) | — |
| Loop the region | ⌘D |
| Copy to a sample lane | ⌘L |
| Copy drums · bass · melody · vocals | ⌘1–⌘4 |
| Copy instrumental · drums+bass | ⌘5 ⌘6 |
| Save the selection as a WAV | — |
Delete and Mute are different. Delete splits the clip and leaves a hole. Mute silences that range while the clip stays one continuous piece at its original length and grid position.
Stem copies separate on demand. You don't need to prepare stems first — click Copy vocals and a placeholder clip appears on a free sample lane, filling in when separation finishes. The clip you copied from is left exactly as it was.
Clip actions
Right-click a clip with no selection:
- Set downbeat — marks beat 1 at the playhead and re-phases the grid.
- Show all stems / Show vocal + instrumental — four rows, or the vocal-versus-instrumental pair.
- Duplicate · Split at playhead · Unsplit · Delete.
- Tempo-match to master, nudge a beat either way, reset trim.
- Save as Acapella / Instrumental / Split both.
- Effects — Volume, Filter, High, Mid, Low, Echo, Reverb. Click to cycle off → subtle → strong,
or press V F H K L E R.
- Pitch up / down —
+and−, ±12 semitones. Real pitch shifting: the clip keeps its length
and grid position, so the tempo doesn't move with the pitch.
⌘Z and ⌘Y undo and redo, 25 steps deep.
Exporting
⤓ Export renders the canvas to a WAV in ~/Music/MixMind Exports. Any clip copied from a stem is re-fetched at full stereo first, so the export isn't limited by the small working stems.
